Have a thing for soft pop-rockers like Mat Kearney, Matt Nathanson, and Joshua Radin? If so, meet Philip Vandermost, a singer-songwriter-guitarist based out of Fullerton, CA, whose second full-length album, The Long Path, is currently for sale on iTunes. This set of tracks is not only insanely addicting and worthy of wearing out your REPEAT button, but is also a delightful showcase of intelligent and well-played music. My favorite!
Vandermost embarks on an introspective journey with The Long Path, touching on damaged relationships, lost friendships, and, repeatedly, the aching unknown of the future. First track “A New Way” successfully functions as an opening birth of the artist’s creativity, held steady by a solid drumbeat and staccato guitar strums. The chorus repeats as the song dribbles into the beginning of a long path of self-discovery and reinvention: “Making your own day/Going a new way.”
Highlights on the album include the must-hear “Turn Me Around,” a haunting track and marriage of deep piano and shrill electric guitar sounds. Also noteworthy are the frantic “Trying Again” and “The Long Path,” which, clocking in at nearly 8 minutes long, could be considered Vandermost’s epic climax mid-album.
The only snoozer in this love fest is the indulgent “Remember,” which could stand to be picked off the album with little consequence.
Overall, The Long Path is an undeniable ear-pleaser and impressive sophomore effort from a blossoming pop-rocker, certainly worthy of a spin around the block. Check out Philip’s official website at http://philvandermost.com/ to hear songs and check out upcoming live shows.
The Long Path is now available for purchase on iTunes.
