Album Review: Voodoun Moi, EP

This jazzy, sultry band from Eugene, Oregon, has a sound just as cool as their name: (Voo-Down-Mwah). On their band page, they explain that the name is French and means, “If you’re down, I’m down. So in other words, if you’re not down, we are still down.” Whatever the name means, their music clearly defines a good taste of jazz, and their three song EP leaves us yearning for more.

Their song “Walter” has a rhythm you might picture burlesque girls dancing to and has such a good smooth feel to it. Although it’s dificult to understand most of the lyrics in this song, the vocals become their own unique instrument. This is quality jazz music.

As soon as you hear the track “Monthly Lullaby,” you know you’re in for a good listen. The beats in this song scream jazz and funk in a style that engages you to get up and dance. The vocals by Genevieve Bellemare are mesmerizing and seductive. Originally from Canada and just 19 years old, she may have been born to sing jazz music.

“You Can’t Catch Me” is a slow and tantalizing melody that could be well performed in a dark bar with a grand piano. It has an enticing effect, like Peggy Lee or Elvis Presley’s “Fever.” Even though “You Can’t Catch Me” is nearly six minutes long, it gets better with each minute that passes by. The sound satisfies a late night craving for cigars and dry martinis.

The talent is credited to Eric Valentine (keys), Matt Seymour (bass), Susan Richardson (drums), and Genevieve Bellemare on vocals. The band is signed with Palawan Productions, a UK indie label that is beginning to share this brilliant band called Voodoun Moi with the rest of us. We are thankful for that. Learn more here.
