Angelspit: Hello My Name Is

Hello My Name Is

Angelspit's New Album

Angelspit, the cyber-electronic punksters from Sydney, Australia just released their fourth album Hello My Name Is on October 11, 2011. They define their latest album as eleven hymns that celebrate the Occult of the Corporation.

Their style might intimidate some, comparably dressed as Marilyn Manson’s siblings, but their gothic image is just as creative as their sound. Angelspit welcomes the freedom of expression through music and in fashion. While it’s fair to say none of the vocals carry much melody (mainly poetic statements), the band is most recognized by their unique electronic sounds blended with a little rock and punk quality. Their lyrics can sometimes be dark and twisted, seductive and evil, yet other times are sarcastically humorous such as in their track, “Cubicle”, with lyrics “I love my cubicle, my little beige cubicle.” These lyrics still get stuck in my mind and oh what fun it would be if I could blast this track at my own work desk.

“Counterfeit” has a good intro, forceful and exciting. You can almost hear a little of Prodigy’s “Smack my b**** up,” influence with its hard rock guitar riffs and controversial lyrics. Their third track “Vermin,” is my favorite and the first two minutes will absolutely blow your mind. This track should be the new Tetris theme song or better yet would have been amazing had it been featured in the latest Tron film. It is playfully robotic, almost videogame-like, and really captures the artistry this band takes in developing their music. The vocals are also naughty cheerleader(no, not that kind) playfulness, “2, 3, 5, 8. Who do we decapitate?”

“Catatonic” is another interesting blend of sounds and after about a minute-twenty, the vocals get deep and dark. All the same, more electro rhythms compliment the half rapping, matter-of-fact way of singing that can disturb or delight many listeners. Track five, “Monkey Byte,” is a fast-paced song with angry lyrics that shout, “Hell Starts Now!”

All of their one-word track titles offer more intriguing guitar and drum beats such as “Bulletproof,” and “Static.” Another hot track is their instrumental piece called “Deadly,” which has a strong electronic and hypnotic beat you could seriously party with. “Violence” their last track on this album, has haunting lyrics that suggest a lover’s obsession and remorse tied with a slower melody that creeps and becomes romantically twisted.

Overall, I admire the variety of sounds this album offers, and some songs would play well in a psychedelic bar lounge or night club, or perhaps during a walk-through maze at one of Southern California’s Halloween attractions. Hello My Name Is was an appropriate title for this album because just like the open statement it makes, they keep their genre and musical style free for self-expression. Angelspit consists of the mastermind Zoog, the femme fatale-like Destroyx, Matt James on drums, Valerie Gentile on guitar, and The Liar on videography. They are artists, they are five, and they are coming to thrill and corrupt our young on October 15th at Chain Reaction. Be there to experience it, because this is something you won’t want to miss.
