[Album Review] The Droppers: Live for Today
Posted on June 11, 2010 | 2 CommentsOkay gang, right now I’m struggle-central. I am furrowing my brow, clacking my teeth, and squinting a lot. And it’s all because of this dinky 5-track album, Live For Today, from rockers THE DROPPERS (name evolved from The Panty Droppers…YES). It’s no doubt an impressive debut album from the five-piece band, but the sound is so strangely familiar that I am pulling my hair out trying to place it. Who is their soundalike? -
[Album Review] Great Big Things, Self-Titled EP
Posted on May 26, 2010 | No CommentsGREAT BIG THINGS may have released its self-titled EP almost two years ago, but the brief four-song taste test is still single-handedly managing to bring in new waves of fans from all over Southern California. Myself included. You see, while the five guys of GBT have yet to release a full-length album and have a piddling one upcoming show scheduled, I have somehow still caught wind of their, dare I say, ingenious nugget of a debut, and I’m here to spread the love. -
[Album Review] Philip Vandermost: The Long Path
Posted on May 12, 2010 | No CommentsHave a thing for soft pop-rockers like Mat Kearney, Matt Nathanson, and Joshua Radin? If so, meet Philip Vandermost, a singer-songwriter-guitarist based out of Fullerton, CA, whose second full-length album, The Long Path, is currently for sale on iTunes. This set of tracks is not only insanely addicting and worthy of wearing out your REPEAT button, but is also a delightful showcase of intelligent and well-played music. My favorite! -
[Album Review] Yazzie Jay
Posted on April 28, 2010 | No CommentsOrange County soul singer YAZZIE JAY impresses with her album Wild at Heart, a compilation of instrumentation and lyric far beyond her seventeen years. Just six songs long, Yazzie’s succinct debut album is reminiscent of Colbie Caillat’s wildly successful Coco: a gentle, bluesy voice layered over tracks of acoustic guitars, simple percussion, and fluid keyboard riffs. And while this could be enough to satisfy any late-night drive home, this album is more than that. Wild at Heart takes off in lyric, and we meet Yazzie Jay, the storyteller, as she sings her way through deeply personal experiences. The slow and sexy must-hear “Ex” rips into the confusion of getting caught up in a toxic love, while a sizzling jazzy “Max” pours out sadness over the inability to communicate with a loved one. The themes are all over the map, but they’re worth tapping into. -
Album Review: Alwayz Double Dippin
Posted on April 21, 2010 | No CommentsHave a penchant for goofy white guys rapping about chips and dip? Meet Alwayz Double Dippin’, hip-hop trio extraordinaire from Huntington Beach, CA, made up of members Mr. Preston, Sleek Sheek, and DJ Richard Rocka. Following in the increasing popular footsteps of electro hoppers LMFAO and 3OH!3, Alwayz Double Dippin’ mixes humorous, and usually offensive, lyrics with danceable club beats to create a sound I don’t know whether to love or hate. Listen… their stuff may be catchy, but with song titles such as “Sharks With Laser Beams” and “No Hookerz”, I have trouble taking these guys with anything more than a grain of salt.
