The walking charm of an innocent boy in love, with the old debonair soul of a 1960’s hippie can best describe Jason Reeves in my eyes. As far as his music goes… well, picture a time when love letters were written with the uttermost sentiment and still hand delivered to your mailbox. Of course, if love letters had a melody attached there would be a great deal of acoustic guitars and percussion in the background, making your heart flutter behind every lyric.
Reeves may not literally be Love Sick at this point in his life, but that’s the title of his new album, which will be released later this winter through Warner Brother Records.
For those of you who have been avid fans and listeners of Reeves’ music, just know there is an added spark to your musical relationship with this fellow this time around, which appears to be very promising.
“I played around with a lot of different sounds this time, I think I had a lot more fun in the studio, messing around with different tones… It’s definitely different, it’s a new sound for me, but the songs are still the same songs I’ve always been writing,” adds Jason. “The only thing I want to stay true to is the honesty in my songs, and keeping the lyrics genuine. You can’t keep making the same sounding albums ten times in a row. I can’t imagine people being interested in that. Every record in my opinion has to do something different than the last one, even if it comes back around, you can’t just stay somewhere it’s not progressive in my mind.”
Not only will he be keeping the fire alive with a new sound, but there’s also quite a few collaborations in the The Love Sick track list, that which includes singer/songwriter extraordinaire Kara Dioguardi, as well as long-time collab and duet partner Colbie Caillat.
Jason, who always has a pen running a marathon, can have his thoughts and inspirations fall right through filling blank pages by the hundreds; but even with a collection like that The Love Sick was driven more towards the impulse of a musical moment:
“For this new one I started recording the ones I like the most and actually was writing them while recording it, I’m pretty much always writing songs. At least half of it wasn’t even written yet and this conscious came along the way…This one is very spontaneous, very instinctual, and reactionary. It was just like– I did all the parts and all the vocals and the writing very quickly, I didn’t really take too much time to think about it, I feel like that kinda ruins it.”
Within the past decade Jason Reeves has pulled out the root from inside his chest bearing the story of his soul for all our ears to listen to. His encounters with love and heartbreak have just made him chase the emotion as if it were Moby Dick, embracing it in every form and parading its beauty with no reserve:
“If I was afraid of love or stayed away from it, I don’t think I’d have much to write with. If you get a little taste of it you’re gonna want more, it’s a beautiful drug…even if you don’t have it at the moment you remember that feeling.”
If you find yourself ‘love sick’ and want a dose of this Iowa native you can catch him performing live this fall as he kicks off his Helium Hearts Tour.
